I got the calculation methods from a local newspaper article which I have copied below.
This article is meant to help the reader in finding two important factors, which may be forgotten by them due to various reasons. I have experienced in my life that many people remember their birthday, yet they do not have a clue as to the time of birth. Some are not even aware of their zodiac sign and asterism.
This results in, many problems arising when auspicious times are being calculated during the major events in one's life. Some lament that they are unable to get their horoscopes examined, as they are unaware of their birth time and the lagna (zodiac sign). In our society there are many who do not have a horoscope. This may attribute to mistrust in astrology, unavailability of a horoscope during childhood or losing it at a certain point of time. The majority are aware of their birthday. We celebrate it and it's written in the birth certificate. But what about the time of birth?
This article will be helpful to those whose birthday is known but the birth time is not known. You may question as to why it was not requested from the hospital. In the past, due to inadequacy of health and transport facilities, many were born at home with the assistance of a midwife. Even the birth certificate was obtained from the village headman several weeks after the birth due to inadequate facilities.
However, this article focuses on finding the zodiac sign, if you know the birthday or the time. Further it is discussed as to how to find the birth time if you know your birthday and the zodiac sign.
This can be done by visiting an astrologer, who will calculate it for you using the 'almanac', the 'Panchanga' calendar or the computer. This article will teach you as to how to find the above mentioned details free of charge. A good astrologer can easily find the time of birth if the birthday and the zodiac sign are available; but if you don't have one, this article helps you to calculate it on your own.
Easy steps to find the time of birth or the zodiac sign are given below. In this case, there is no need for the almanac of the relevant year. This will be easy for those who have some knowledge of astrology.
First you need to know the order of zodiac signs. There are twelve signs. The correct order is given in chart 1.
Whenever making the horoscope of an individual, the most important factor is 'solar transition.' Solar transition is the process of the sun's movement from one sign to another. This happens periodically once in 30 days. Unlike other stars, Sun and Moon do not acquire a retrograde motion. Instead they only make forward movement. The sun remains in a Rashi for a limited period of thirty days. For the Moon it is only 2 ½ days.
Accordingly this transition of Sun occurs continuously and when Sun transits from Pisces to Aries, we have been accustomed to celebrate it as the Sinhala New Year. This transition of Sun from one Rashi to another takes place once in thirty days, the duration is known as 'Solar month' (Surya Masa). This solar month begins on the fifteenth day of each month. Let's refer the chart below to understand the solar transition.
From the second chart you can find the exact month and the Rashi where the sun is positioned. This is not changeable.
The third chart is about, how the twelve (12) Rashis vary in the course a day. Pay you attention to the serial number mentioned for your benefit.
This chart is valid for any year. Using the pattern of the Rashi, you can find your zodiac sign (lagna) and birth time. Now let's find your zodiac sign. First you have to find your birthday and month in chart 2.
For example if birthday is tenth of February, the Sun (Ravi) is in Capricorn (Rashi Capricorn). If it is 20th of November, Ravi is in Scorpio. Now it is very much easy for you to find out the position of the 'solar Rashi/sign.
Let's move on to the next stage. The third chart contains your time of birth. If you only know the birthday and birth time, find out the serial number from the third chart.
Note down the Rashi to which the Sun belongs on your birthday.
Now since you know the Rashi of Ravi, on your birthday, note down all the zodiac signs from that to the first serial number. We will clarify it more clearly with the following example.
If your birthday is on 10th of February, we know Ravi was in Capricorn Rashi. Suppose you were born between 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. which belongs to Capricorn Rashi. Calculate the order of Rashis up to first serial number; that is from 4.30 a.m. to 6.30 a.m.
Going upwards to first time interval, the Rashi Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and at 4.30 a.m. – 6.30 am. You will get Rashi of Aries. Now it is clear that you were born in the Aries Rashi.
The second example is 20th of November. Ravi is in Scorpio Rashi on the birthday. If you were born between the interval from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., you belong to the seventh section. The 7th section belongs to Scorpio; then calculate upwards. (1. Scorpio 2. Sagittarius 3. Capricorn 4. Aquarius 5. Pisces 6. Aries 7. Taurus)
Remember that you have to calculate from the section to which you belong up to the first section (4.30 a.m. – 6.30 a.m.).
If you are aware of your Rashi (lagna), do the reverse in calculating from the first section to the section you belong which helps you to find your birth time.

Let’s find the birth Rashi (Lagna)
By S. Weerarathne - Peradeniya
The one thing that everyone inherits when they are born to this world is name. Buddhism says that although the body decays, the name remains. Each individual is given a name. When prince Siddhartha was born, King Suddhodana brought the royal Brahamins to the 'naming ceremony.' This indicates that the naming ceremony has a long history. According to astrology, the three factors that are considered in 'naming' are birthday, the zodiac sign and the asterism under which one is born. Therefore a human being is linked to astrology from birth.
This article is meant to help the reader in finding two important factors, which may be forgotten by them due to various reasons.
